Description
band that has already become an institution, the yo la tengo feature this made "stuff like that there, a set of versions and reinterpretations to which they added two new songs, in the way of celebration of the 25th anniversary of the fascinating fakebook (1990,) an album that has since revealed its mastery in transforming any version, be popular u obscura, in a song with the stamp yo la Tengo.
avoiding at all costs the distortion, this album is based on acoustic guitars, occasional twangs (sometimes remembering the ry cooder of "paris, texas,") brushed batteries and fragile voices, still counting on the precious auxilio of the guitarist dave schramm once the band's element in its initial phase.
The versions oscillate between renowned bands and artists (hank williams, the cur, the lovin' spoonful) and more obscure (special pillow, great antietam planes) always with the trio's facet, highlighting the vocal performance of georgia hubley in the opening theme "my heart's not in it" (darlene mcrea) and the famous "i'm so lone isome".
as far as recreations are concerned, "the ballad of red Buckets from my favorite "Electr-o-pura", "deeper into movies" of the equally seductive "i can hear the heart beating as one" and "all your secrets" of the latest "popular songs," are passed by the acoustic crib, not yet losing its magic. with regard to the new themes, (both interpreted by ira kaplan) oscillate between the country ballad in awhileaway and the closest rickety of the "ylt-type song" that led me to wish for a more electrified version of it.
if doubts persisted with regard to their stylistic diversity, the criterion of choice of versions and the foundation in the discography editions (which was in the most recent appreciators,) this album dispels them completely, since it was always so that yo la tengo ruled their career and always did well.
