Oriundos do Porto, os Tártaros , foram um dos conjuntos portugueses que ( juntamente com os Titãs e o Conjunto Mistério) adaptaram a música popular portuguesa a um estilo de Rock (o yé yé).
Formados nos anos 60, participaram em vários concursos yé yé organizados no antigo Cinema Monumental, em Lisboa (verdadeiro acontecimento para a juventude da época, que via estes concursos não só como uma contestação ao regime vigente, mas como afirmação de uma contracultura em oposição à cultura dominante, que na música era representada pelo nacional-cançonetismo, pelo fado e pelos Ranchos Folclóricos uniformes, com os acordeões a dominarem- Pelo menos aqui havia guitarras eléctricas e cabelos um pouco compridos).
Para António Duarte, jornalista, músico experimental, ex-chefe de redacção da primeira revista de Rock exclusivamente dedicada ao fenómeno Rock Português (a revista "Rock em Portugal" que existiu nos anos de 77, 78 e 79) e autor do livro "25 Anos de Rock N' Portugal" os Tártaros estariam incluídos na categoria de yé yé populista.
Em 1968 editam o seu mais famoso disco, um EP, totalmente instrumental que inclui "Serei Feliz Com O Teu Amor", "Oh Rosa Arredonda A Saia", "Tartária" (que era uma espécie de hino oficial da banda) e "Valsa da Meia Noite". António Duarte considera o tema "Tartária" como um tema que ficará na história do Rock português por ser o Twist mais speedado" e louco, servindo a muita gente para bater o pé até à exaustão.
Os Tártaros ainda gravam mais dois EP's que contêm os temas : "Magic Moment", "Não Quero Ir À Tua Festa", "Since I've Lost My Mind (For You)", "Não Quero Nada", "Pistoleiro", "Beijos Teus", "Engano", "Sonho Dum Poeta", etc.
Em 1997, a editora portuense Edisco lança um CD com variados temas da banda , cujo título é "Valsa Da Meia Noite".
Numa época em que o Rock Português se reduzia a uma meia dúzia de grupos que existiam no Porto e em Lisboa, quando as condições técnicas deixavam muito a desejar e o Rock (ou yé yé) não era muito bem visto por uma certa camada de público mais idoso, os Tártaros deram cartas e foram dos poucos que conseguiram alguma notoriedade.
