somewhere between braga and gumarães, it ran the year 2002 in the village of taipas broths, a group of irreducible friends, coming from projects however extinct, decided to create a band: smartini. the objective was clear and consisted of resisting the musical marasmo surrounding that area of the lusitania. munidos of sounds assumedly supported by a musical structure that seeks to describe landscapes and moments, always based on a momentary intuition and reproduced through alternate melodic tracks between uncontrollable and electrical heart palpitations, have gone to the conquest of portugal spreading their songs a little everywhere. The reactions have been positive, not only from the public who attends their concerts, but also from the specialist criticism. In fact, the following text, from the authorship of the journalist of the magazine blitz, luís war, is one of these examples of the good reception that the smartini have had:
"... the theory of eternal return is put into practice in almost an hour of reminiscences that begins with a take-off without overshadows. the machine retreats until 1992 and ahead of us could be the sonic youth without fatn kim but with the guitars slashing in search of the perfect and low filigree and battery working around the sonic diaphragm. there is dilution between the voice of laurel mendes (inexpressive, with eyes closed) and melodic magma, in a planant fluidity regime. there is hunger of yo la tengo and predictable alternation between calm and creep. "sugar train", an example of this bipolar experience, is not limited to rhyming with "sugar kane" - sometimes it is just the sonic youth we hear, without intersections. everything very well ginasticated, in gang habitat and stripping in which it accommodates, without frights, "i wanna be your dog", version of stooges to respect the imperative of mesmity (podiam ser os dinosaur jr). the landing, soft, is applauded. 2006 waits for us to leave. were the smartini and live between braga and Guimarães. "
So, and after four years working songs interspersed with several concerts, in 2007 the smartini released the long-awaited debut album. titled "sugar train", the first album of this minhota band should be on the store shelves during the month of April. about the album, the band describes it as a kind of train journey through some of the most alternative regions of the song, almost as if they were the machinists of an old steam locomotive that travels the tracks of a single line towards the noise of white glenn, to the soundscapes of yo la tengo u to the electric explosion of the sonic youth. paraphrasing the metaphor, do not oam shovels or charcoal, and much less cast black smoke into the atmosphere. yes, they are guitars and they throw sounds into the musical atmosphere. an album that debits the energy that so well characterizes the Smartini.
Smartini is Portuguese quartet formed in a village between Guimarães and Braga, called Caldas das Taipas. The formation of the band consists of Lourenço Mendes (voice and guitar), Ricardo Costa (bass), Patrício Ferreira (drums) and João Paulo Duarte (guitar). They began to play in the early 1990s as Almas Nocturnas and some years later the started to act as Subcultura. In the transition to the 2000s, João Paulo Duarte joins the band complementing it with a multidimensional guitar sound, using the effects pedals. Their sound bens between its arty lyrics and the sound moving from shoegaze and sonic rock.
