Description
in 1967, the holy antonium discotheque edited a long-lasting album with twelve themes. was thus born the first 33 rotations of zeca afonso, something that today may seem irrelevant, but that almost three decades ago represented a true feat for any career artist.
only that josé afonso, already at 38 years old, did not want to be an artist, and much less career. that even, indeed, was already noticed in his songs, then marked by a generous liberation pedagogy? and it is good not to forget that several of his songs of this time were created as an instrument of his teaching work. However, they are able to be of timelessness that leads us today to listen to them with the pleasure that only the great works provide.
"Balades and Songs" is the last witness of the amateur phase of zeca afonso. prevented from teaching, he will dedicate himself whole to music and, almost willing to say that there are evils that come for good, there will then be to create some of the most beautiful songs in the history of what carlos walls, another generous master, calls the little music.
What significance can today have to listen to these (and others) songs that, forty-five years ago, represent so much for so many people? the best answer for this and other doubts is here, in whole, on this disk. song to song, no tricks or special effects.

José Afonso was, and still remains among the most influential folk and political musicians in Portuguese history.
He is usually referred to as Zeca Afonso - Zeca being the Portuguese diminutive form of José. Take note that he didn't use this as his artist name on his own releases.
He became an icon among Portuguese left-wing activists due to his music's role in the resistance against Oliveira Salazar's dictatorial regime. This resistance finally triumphed in 1974, with the pro-democratic leftist military coup, called the Carnation Revolution. In the ensuing revolutionary process he was a very active musician and continued composing political and folk songs, often criticizing post-revolutionary changes. Years after his death, he is still widely listened to, not only in Portugal, but also abroad.
