A death metal band from Ludvika, Sweden, founded by Peter Tägtgren in October 1991.
Having spent three years in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in the late 1980’s/early 90’s, Peter Tägtgren was heavily influenced by the local death metal scene. Thus he was determined to form a band of his own and in 1991 he put together a demo tape 'Rest In Pain' under the moniker Seditious. Not satisfied on the results, he recorded a new demo in 1992 and asked Magnus "Masse" Broberg to do the vocals. This resulted in a record deal with Nuclear Blast Records, but the guys were facing a problem of not having a real line-up or even a proper name for their band. Things moved on fast however and Masse came up with the name Hypocrisy, the line-up was completed by Mikael Hedlund (bass), Lars Szöke (drums) and Jonas Österberg (guitar), and their debut album ‘Penetralia’ was released in October 1992. Still, the line-up was revolving a bit as Österberg left soon after the album release, but more significant was the departure of Masse Broberg, who was hospitalised during their first European tour in 1993 after suffering a broken ear drum in the middle of a gig. This resulted in him going back home from the tour and at the same time quitting Hypocrisy. Tägtgren was now forced to take over the vocals as well and so the classic Hypocrisy trio of Tägtgren, Hedlund and Szöke was cemented and remained intact for the following 11 years. Szöke left the group in 2004 and was replaced by Reidar “Horgh” Horghagen. Throughout the years there has also been several guitar players joining for touring purposes.
