the Finnish quartet arctica, progressive metal sonata, specialized in an orchestral variation of European heavy metal fusing the sounds of bands like the europe with the instrumentals of a dream theater. were born in 1996, and recorded several demos until they edited their first single, unopened, by spinefarm records in July 1999. the producer mikko karmila (children of bodom, stratovarius, nightwish) engraved and mixed the first full album of sonata arctica, elliptica, edited in 2000.
After a successful tour, the group launched an ep, Successor-MCD, which contained live tracks and some covers, in addition to the originals.
sonata arctica were recognized in the hard n' heavy magazine that voted on them as the newcomer of the year, as well as emma, the filandese musical awards.
