Akhnaten is the third in the composer Philip Glass' trilogy of operas about men who changed the world in which they lived through the power of their ideas. Akhnaten's subject is religion. Its title was derived from the Egyptian pharaoh Akhnaten, who was the first monotheist in recorded story. The opera describes the rise, reign, and fall of Akhnaten in a series of tableaus.

compositor e músico americano nascido em 31 de janeiro de 1937 em Baltimore, Maryland, EUA.
Foi casado com JoAnne Akalaitis de 1965 a 1980. Estudou música com William Bergsma, Vincent Pershichetti, Darius Milhaud e Nadia Boulanger. Em 1966 trabalhou com Ravi Shankar, que mudou sua perspectiva de composição. No outono de 1968, ele fundou o Philip Glass Ensemble para tocar sua música e em 1971 ele começou a produção de Chatham Square para lançar sua música.
