Soul Asylum é uma banda de rock alternativa americana formada em 1981 em Minneapolis, Minnesota, mais conhecida pelo Grammy-winning 1993 hit "Runaway Train". A banda foi originalmente chamada Loud Fast Rules, com uma formação composta por Dave Pirner, Dan Murphy, Karl Mueller e Pat Morley. Eles mudaram seu nome para Soul Asylum em 1983. Morley foi substituído por Grant Young em 1984. A banda gravou três álbuns com Twin/Tone Records e dois com A&M Records, com pouco sucesso comercial. Em 1992, eles lançaram o álbum de platina Grave Dancers Union, com "Runaway Train". A banda tocou na inauguração do presidente Bill Clinton no início do próximo ano. Eles também marcaram um disco de platina com o álbum Let Your Dim Light Shine três anos depois.
