Após a banda de ritmo e blues The Paramounts se desmantelou em 1966, o cantor Gary Brooker ajudou a formar Procol Harum no início de 1967.

Em julho de 1967, a banda recebeu seu primeiro hit no 1 "A Whiter Shade of Pale", co-escrito por Brooker & Reid, tornando-se uma das primeiras canções reais de "symphonic rock". Muitos álbuns e singles foram lançados depois, mas nunca gostei do sucesso de seu primeiro single.
