A banda sueca começou como uma banda grindcore chamada Scum (27) em 1989.

Formado por membros Themgoroth (vocal), Olavi Mikkonen (guitarra) e Ted Lundström (baixo.) Themgoroth eventualmente deixou a banda e foi substituído por Johan Hegg, que também resultou em uma mudança musical em direção a Death/Viking Metal. Anders Hansson (guitarra) e Nico Mehra (bateria) juntaram-se à banda e depois finalmente mudaram o nome para Amon Amarth em 1992.

O nome da banda é tirado da trilogia "Senhor dos Anéis" de Tolkien e significa a poderosa montanha da perdição.
